Can Magik put the top card of her deck into play as if it was in her hand, such as with Mutant Protectors (Mutant Genesis #17)?

Answer

No. Putting a card into play is not the same as playing a card, and Magik’s ability only allows her to play the top card of her deck, not put it into play.
